Etsy's search engine treats your tags, title, and description very differently. Vietnamese sellers we audit usually waste 6–8 of their 13 tags by duplicating words from the title or stuffing single keywords. Here's the cheat sheet.
Tags: your 13 chances to be found
Etsy gives you exactly 13 tags per listing, each up to 20 characters.
The most important rule: each tag is treated as one complete search phrase, not as a bag of words. The tag handmade ceramic mug matches searches for that whole phrase. It does NOT also match handmade, ceramic, or mug individually.
That changes everything.
Don't repeat your title in tags
This is the #1 mistake. If your title says Handcrafted Vietnamese Ceramic Coffee Mug, you do NOT need a tag that says ceramic mug. Etsy already gets that signal from the title.
Tags should expand coverage, not duplicate it.
Bad: title says ceramic mug and tag says ceramic mug → wasted tag.
Good: title says ceramic mug and tag says coffee gift mom → expands to a new search pocket.
The 7 tag categories to cover
Spread your 13 tags across these buckets:
- Product type variations.
ceramic mug,coffee mug,pottery cup - Style.
minimalist mug,boho ceramics - Material / craft.
handmade ceramic,glazed pottery,wheel thrown - Color.
sage green mug, cream mug - Audience.
gift for coffee lover, gift for mom, housewarming present - Occasion.
birthday gift,wedding gift,christmas gift - Use case / moment.
morning coffee mug,tea ceremony cup
Cover at least one tag in each bucket. If you only use 1–2 buckets, you're invisible to most of the search variations buyers type.
Title hierarchy: front-load the highest weight
Etsy's search ranks the first words of a title higher than the rest. The first 40 characters matter most.
- Slot 1 (chars 1–40): product type + primary modifier.
Personalized Wedding Gift, - Slot 2 (chars 40–80): secondary modifier + material.
Handmade Wooden Cake Topper, - Slot 3 (chars 80–140): occasion / audience / extra keywords.
Custom Mr & Mrs Decoration for Reception
Don't waste slot 1 on filler like Beautiful, Unique, Handmade, Lovely. Those words are everywhere and Etsy weights them low.
Description: less SEO than you think
Etsy DOES index your description, but it's weighted much lower than tags or title for search ranking. Where description matters:
- First 160 characters: show up in Google previews and Etsy preview, drive CTR
- Whole body: drives conversion (whether the buyer actually clicks "Add to cart")
Don't keyword-stuff descriptions. Write for the buyer.
Bonus: attributes are free SEO
When you fill in the Material, Color, Occasion, Recipient, Style, and Holiday attributes, you feed Etsy's filtering UI directly. Buyers using filters (a huge segment) only see listings with those attributes filled.
It takes 30 seconds per listing. Most sellers skip it. Don't.
Quick audit checklist
Run this on your top 5 listings tonight:
- ❑ Title uses the strongest keyword in the first 40 characters
- ❑ No tag duplicates a word that's already prominent in the title
- ❑ All 13 tags used
- ❑ At least 5 of the 7 tag buckets covered
- ❑ All available attributes filled
- ❑ First photo has clear focal point + isolated subject
- ❑ Description first paragraph names product + key benefit
If you fail 2+ of these on a listing, that listing has room to grow.
