Your Etsy impressions just dropped. Here is how to investigate

You wake up, open Shop Manager, and impressions are down 40% from last week. Nothing changed on your end. What happened?

The bad news: Etsy doesn't tell you. The good news: there's a five-step diagnostic that catches 90% of causes within a few minutes.

Step 1: Is it shop-wide or listing-specific?

Open Shop Manager → Stats → Listings. Sort by impression change.

  • Almost all listings down: account-level issue. Could be a policy hit, Etsy ads pause, or a marketplace-wide algorithm shift.
  • A few listings down (one category): SEO or quality issue with those specific listings.
  • One listing down: that listing crossed a threshold (low conversion, bad review, broken variation).

This single question narrows the search dramatically.

Step 2: Did you change anything in the last 14 days?

Etsy re-indexes a listing whenever you edit it. Tag changes, title edits, price moves, variation updates. Any of these resets your relevance score temporarily, sometimes for 2–4 weeks.

Common culprits:

  • Renewed expired listings → reset score
  • Bulk tag updates → re-indexed all at once
  • Price hikes >15% → shifts you out of certain search buckets
  • Switched primary photo → CTR re-evaluated from zero

If you made changes, give it 2–3 weeks before assuming the change "broke" things.

Step 3: Check the marketplace for shifts

Etsy occasionally rolls out search algorithm updates. They rarely announce them publicly, but symptoms ripple through the seller community fast.

  • Search "etsy algorithm change [current month]" on Reddit r/Etsy and Etsy seller forums
  • Check the Etsy seller news feed in Shop Manager
  • If multiple sellers in your niche report the same drop, it's not just you

Step 4: Look at conversion, not just impressions

Impressions alone are misleading. The real metric is revenue per visitor.

  • Impressions down + conversion up = quality > quantity. You may actually be making more money on fewer visits. Don't panic.
  • Impressions down AND conversion down = real problem. Move to step 5.
  • Impressions down, conversion up, revenue same = your listings are reaching better-fit buyers. Fine.

Step 5: Common fixable causes

Once you've narrowed it down, here are the usual suspects, ranked by how often we see them:

  1. Stale listings. A listing older than 6 months with no recent edits, renewals, or sales gets deprioritized. Edit one field (anything. A tag, an attribute) to signal "active".
  2. Tag-title overlap. If your title and tags say the same thing, Etsy treats half your tags as wasted. Diversify.
  3. Missing attributes. Material, color, occasion. Fill all of them. This is free SEO.
  4. High refund rate. A burst of refunds in the last 60 days drops you in search.
  5. Late shipping. One late ship-by date affects Star Seller and search visibility for weeks.

How to start the recovery

  • Refresh 2–3 listings per day for 2 weeks (small edits, real engagement, not bulk)
  • Fill missing attributes on every listing
  • Update the first photo on your top 5 listings (biggest CTR lever)
  • Run a small ($1–3/day) Etsy Ads test on your best listings to inject impressions
If impressions are still down after 30 days of focused work, the issue is structural (niche shift, marketplace saturation). At that point, it's time to A/B test a new product line, not chase the old listings.
